A bit of this and that

Isabella needed new shoes and so a trip into Falmouth was on the cards. Yet again, I forgot Lucy had drama club after school and patiently waited at the school gates for her to appear - durr - and finally worked out that now would be a good time to go shoe shopping as we had an hour to kill. This is what we see when we go shopping in Falmouth...

You see, the river Fal runs from the sea into the harbour mouth - 3rd deepest natural harbour in the world - past the docks...

through the town alongside the main street. These pictures show what we see from any of the little alleyways that lead off from the one main street; all were taken from the car park which Isabelaa and I use in the centre of town. This rather poorly taken shot gives an idea of what we see looking back over our shoulder into the town fromt he same car park: a glorious higgeldy-piggeldy mixture of rooftops silhoutted against a bright blue sky.

Hmm, must take more time over these pictures in future as they really aren't of good quality; then, we did have pretty teal blue and chocolate brown shoes to buy!

Our elderflower champagne is almost ready and fizzing so much that even the pressurised barrel split yesterday to gush a steady stream all over my dresser; thought the kitchen smelled a little worse than usual! Her's a posy I picked the other day to dry for when the hedgerows stop billowing with their creamy umbels. Many things - vinegars, tisanes, cordials, etc can be made with dried flowers as well as fresh.

We made so much cordial we are having to store it in demijohns as we can't face any more bottling up just yet. Well, time to finish; here's a pie to end on as I seem to have included food in most posts lately.

Have a lovely day all xx

  2. Not a bad view when you go shopping! Pip, I'm going to have to make a note to myself only to read your blog when I have already stuffed myself as you always make me feel hungry! One of the things I do miss from our old home is being able to wander out the front door and pluck a load of elderflowers from the hedgerow - have you ever made fritters (bet you have!).

  3. I never new Falmouth was so pretty. A lovely place to go shopping. You have reminded me that I must go and make some elderflower champagne and cordial. I'm okay at the cordial, but last year the champagne was a dismal, flat failure. What recipe do you use Pipany? Is it foolproof? Yummy looking pie too - what lurks beneath that glorious golden crust?

  4. SO heartless Pipany. Why cant you post boring old pictures of....um, stone quarries or something, instead of making me cry?

  8. Ooooo lovely as always - but where are the pictures of the shoes. You can't tease us and tell us the colour and then say they are pretty, but show us nothing . . .sulks.

  18. We had a wonderful boat trip from St Mawes to Falmouth on our first ever family trip to Cornwall. It's one of my most favourite memories and I was thrilled to discover what a pretty town it is. I loved the atmosphere of a real, working community but attractive at the same time, the real Cornwall I suppose. I fulfilled a long held ambition and bought fresh fish and shellfish from a stall on the quay and made the tastiest seafood risotto ever back at our cottage.
Thanks for sharing, these lovely pictures brought back some happy memories.

  19. Pipany, you've reminded me how lovely Falmouth is...I don't go over nearly often enough. It's so lovely just sitting by the water as the town bustles around you. Sun again here today. Bliss! x

  20. Oh Pip you are so lucky to live by the sea! I miss it so dreadfully...

Our elderflower is finally in blossom too, so I need to get going with the cordial making as well - I don't manage such industrial quantities as you by the sound of it. Just a couple of bottles!

I get very confused with my children's timetables and activities too. My usual trick though is to leave the school grounds without one of them!

The shoes sound delightful - I wish I still had a tiny one to buy such divine little things for...
